Game Spotlight: Detroit Become Human

If you’ve been paying attention to the upcoming video game releases, you’ll probably know that Sony have got some amazing titles set to drop this year. However, while everyone’s excited about games such as God of War and Spiderman, one that looks to be flying under the radar is Detroit: Become Human.

After being announced over two years ago at a Paris Games Week press conference, we’re now just a few weeks away from being able to experience the latest title from the team at Quantic Dream, who previously developed Beyond: Two Souls, Heavy Rain, and Farenheit. I never had the chance to play these games in the past, but Quantic Dream have developed a considerably large fanbase for a reason so why not jump in now?

With that said, let’s take a look at the latest game to be in the spotlight; Detroit: Become Human.

What’s it about?

Detroit: Become Human is a third-person action adventure game that places a large emphasis on the decisions that a player can make and how it can impact the story as you progress through the game.

In Detroit: Become Human, players are put in control of three different characters, all of which are androids with their own unique characteristics.

First up, we have Connor. Connor is a prototype android designed to investigate deviant androids that, for whatever reason, begin to act suspiciously or endanger others.

Next, we have Kara. As some of you might know, Kara was the character (and title) featured in Quantic Dream’s for a Playstation 3 tech demo that they showed off back in 2012. Kara is a new android who is placed within a home to work as a servant.

Finally, there’s Marcus. Marcus is an android on a mission to liberate other androids from the control of humans so that they can live their own lives.

It looks like each character while shine a very different light on the world within Detroit: Become Human, and it also appears that each character will be met with their own unique problems that players will have to face. It’s an interesting approach that Quantic Dream have taken, and I’m interested in seeing how well they pull it off. 

What can players do?

If you’ve played any of Quantic Dream’s previous titles, you’ll know that their games have a heavy emphasis on the choices that the player gets to make. This level on importance has been increased significantly in Detroit: Become Human.

The decisions that you make in the game can impact the storyline in many ways, both small and large. Ultimately, there are no right or wrong choices, as the player can progress through the game however they see fit, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be cautious.

In Detroit: Become Human, time is an important factor. In a highly entertaining demo presented last December at PSX, we got to see Connor being thrown into a hostage situation which he had to resolve. In order to increase the chances of succeeding, the player needed to search the area to find out how everything happened in the first place. Through a cutscene the game placed importance on the lack of time that the player had, and when they spent too much time analysing for evidence, the game reminded the player once again by killing off a character in the game. It’s an interesting mechanic, and one that will have players trying to balance analysing evidence and selecting the correct choices to ensure they get an ideal outcome.

Speaking of outcomes, don’t expect to see a game over screen because there isn’t one. A single decision could result in the death of a character, including one that you control, and the game will merely branch out based on the decisions that you’ve made. I’ve made many decisions in these types of games that I’ve immediately regretted, and thankfully Quantic Dream have allowed the ability to rewind the scene in order to adjust the choice they made. It’ll be interesting to see just how often this function is used, and whether Quantic Dream have placed a limit on how many times a player’s allowed to use it.

What’s on the horizon?

Neither Sony or Quantic Dream have outlined any post-launch plans for the game just yet, and it’s possible that we won’t have any extra content added to the game. However, with the introduction of three playable characters for players to control, it wouldn’t surprise me if Quantic Dream eventually added additional story content focusing on a new character, or possibly more.

I mentioned earlier that I’ve never had the chance to play a game developed by Quantic Dream, but I think that’s going to change with the release of Detroit: Become Human. Based on the footage that we’ve seen so far, the wealth of choices that players will have in the game could lead to many having completely different experiences from each other, and I think that’s going to keep people talking about the game once it releases.
