E3 Preview: Bethesda

Compared to some other publishers, Bethesda are relatively new to E3 press conferences. Holding their first in 2015, they’ve been there every year since and have had some pretty great reveals, such as Fallout 4, Prey, Dishonored 2, and many more.

I think they’ll continue this trend when they hold their E3 press conference on Sunday, June 10. With that in mind, let’s talk about what we might see when we tune in.

Doom

We saw the return of Doom back in 2016, and it was a massive success. The game kept to its roots, yet felt modern and fresh. With such a significant amount of success, it’s likely that we’ll see Doom again and it could be soon.

Assuming most of the team at id Software moved onto a sequel to Doom after its release, that means that we’d be looking at around two years of development time on the game already. It wouldn’t surprise me if it was announced at Bethesda’s E3 conference this year and released in the first half of 2019.

Prey

While it wasn’t the one of the biggest sellers of 2017, Prey was a remarkable game. If you’ve read previous articles, you’d know that I felt that it deserved more attention than what it got thanks to its unique premise and superb execution.

Bethesda are aware of this, and while I’m not expecting a sequel to the game to be announced already, I think it’s definitely in the realm of possibility that we’ll see an expansion announced. Arkane Studios previously did this for Dishonored 2, so it could very well occur again here.

The Elder Scrolls Online

Since its release, The Elder Scrolls Online has received a considerable amount of support to update and sustain the game. This has involved DLC and expansions that add content to the game.

The Elder Scrolls Online has made an appearance in past Bethesda conferences, so there’s precedent for it already. While an expansion is set to release just before E3 on June 5, if there’s an additional DLC in the pipeline it’s possible that we’ll see an announcement here.

Starfield

Rumours regarding this new IP began swirling last year, and have been hinting that Bethesda Game Studios could be working on a new spaced-themed RPG to go alongside Fallout and The Elder Scrolls.

Outside of a name that could not be final, there isn’t much information that’s known about the title. The game is reportedly coming this fall, which ties in with Bethesda’s recent trend of release games not long after their initial reveal.

Because of this, I’d expect Starfield to take up the majority of their press conference, much like Fallout 4 at E3 2015.

The Elder Scrolls VI

The Elder Scrolls series hasn’t had a new entry in over six years. Instead we’ve seen re-releases of Skyrim on the current generation of consoles, Nintendo Switch, and even a VR edition.

We’re long overdue for a new entry, but if the existence of Starfield is true and it does get revealed, I’d say the chances of a new game being revealed is pretty low. Despite this, I’m going to go ahead and predict that not only will we get a significant amount of coverage for Starfield, but we’ll get a very short teaser for the next entry in The Elder Scrolls series.

Bethesda look like they’ll once again have an interesting conference at this years E3. We’ve just learned that Rage 2 is in the works, so let’s hope that Bethesda have some more surprises planned.
