With a new day comes another collection of E3 press conferences. Square Enix kicked the day off with their presser and showed off a selection of games that we’ll be seeing this year and beyond. Let’s take a look.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Square Enix started things off with a look at Shadow of the Tomb Raider. It began with the opening scene of the game, where Lara and Jonah are stuck in a plane that’s about to crash land in the jungle.
After a brief comment from the game’s senior director, we got an extensive look at some stealth gameplay that saw Lara utilise a variety of tools to take out her foes. This included Lara pulling up an enemy into the treetops by her grappling hook, dropping down on enemies lighting petrol tanks to use as an explosive weapon and more.
There’s a variety of new features alongside more of what you already love. New traversal techniques are in the game, including grappling and wall running, and there’s also full 360-degree underwater swimming, allowing for full blown underwater exploration. There’s also the biggest hub ever to be featured in Tomb Raider game, and there’s even more tombs than ever before.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be available on September 14.
Final Fantasy XIV Online
Afterwards, we moved on to Final Fantasy XIV with a trailer detailing some upcoming content for the game. The trailer focused on the upcoming Under the Moonlight content, and the game’s also getting some crossover content with Monster Hunter World, which will be available later this year.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit
The two creative directors at DONTNOD Entertainment made an appearance next to reveal some new information on The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit.
Captain Spirit is not Life is Strange 2, but is our first introduction into the world. DONTNOD view Life is Strange as a world of multiple stories, and Captain Spirit will be the first of these. In the game, there’ll be some hidden secrets and connections to the story and characters that we’ll see in season 2.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit will be available for free on June 26.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Dragon Quest XI also showed up, and we got a cinematic trailer for the game. We also got the unveiling of the Edition of Light, which can be pre-ordered as of today.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age will be available on September 4.
After the success of Nier: Automata, it looks like the partnership between Square Enix and Platinum Games will continue with the unveiling of a new project between the two called Babylon’s Fall.
The trailer didn’t reveal much at all, but what we do know is that the game is scheduled to release in 2019.
Next up, we got another look at the upcoming Xbox One port of Nier: Automata which is coming later this month on June 26.
We got another friendly reminder for an upcoming game, this time a brief Octopath Traveler trailer played and we got a quick look at the eight playable characters in the game.
Octopath Traveler releases on July 13.
Just Cause 4
After being officially revealed at Microsoft’s conference yesterday, Just Cause 4 made another appearance during Square Enix’s showcase to detail some of the newest features in the game, and it looks like they’ve stepped it up big time.
Just Cause 4 takes destruction to a whole new level with the introduction of extreme weather. Tornadoes can cause chaos, ripping trees from the ground and destroying bridges in their wake. You’ll also see lightning, sandstorms and chilling blizzards. These are all a new challenge for the player, but also a new opportunity to create new gameplay situations.
They’ve completely overhauled the vehicle system, with new additions allowing for more options in gameplay scenarios. They’ve also updated the handling on bikes and cars as well.
The grappling hook is more useful than ever, and you’ll need it to new enemy archetypes that are bound to provide a challenge for players.
Just Cause 4 will be available on December 4 this year.
The Quiet Man
We got a brief trailer for an upcoming game known as The Quiet Man. This is a new IP from Square Enix, and we only got to see a few short seconds of gameplay as the trailer was mostly live-action.
Square Enix will have more information to share on The Quiet Man in August.
Kingdom Hearts III
Kingdom Hearts III made another appearance next to end the show, and we got to see the same trailer that we saw at Microsoft’s presser yesterday with some extra scenes added to it. I was hoping to see some new information here, especially since the game was closing the showcase
