We’ve already seen Sony publish a number of hits for Playstation this year. Games like Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, and Detroit: Become Human have been a hit among fans and Sony are looking to continue this hot streak with the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man this September.
Marvel’s Spider-Man is developed by Insomniac Games, and if you’re unfamiliar with their work this generation, you should know that they’re more than capable of producing a game that exudes greatness. Having previously developed titles such as Sunset Overdrive and Ratchet & Clank, it’s clear that they know what they’re doing. From what we’ve seen of Marvel’s Spider-Man so far, Insomniac look like they’re on their way to another hit.
What’s it about?
The game puts players in control of Peter Parker, who at the time of this game has held the Spider-Man mantle for eight years already. He’s experienced with the role, he’s become known as the protector of New York City.
Parker also has a life of his own though, and you’ll get to see this in the game. At age 23, Parker is currently interning at a laboratory and preparing to graduate from college, so balancing his life alongside that of a superhero is bound to keep him busy.
Insomniac Games and Sony have been quiet in regard to exactly what the game is going to be about, but we do know that Spider-Man will come up against a number of villains. Wilson Fisk will make an appearance in the game, and Spider-Man will also have to take on a gang known as the Inner Demons. Mister Negative controls this gang, and he’s enlisted the help of Electro, Rhino, Scorpion and Vulture after breaking them out of prison. From the sounds of things, these villains are working under another figure but we’ll have to wait until the game releases before we find out who that might be.
What can players do?
Marvel’s Spider-Man puts players in an open world, which means they’ll have the ability to explore New York City as much as they want before moving the story forward. Combat looks varied and fast-paced, and is a little reminiscent of what we’ve seen in the Batman Arkham series. Of course, it’s its own beast and has a variety of elements to set it apart.
Players will have Spider-Man’s wide array of abilities at their disposal. This includes web slinging and the ability to crawl on walls, and Parker’s spider sense. There will also be different gameplay scenarios for players to tackle, ranging from hand-to-hand combat, stealth sections and quick time events.
Peter Parker’s real life will be featured in the game, and you’ll control Parker out of the suit in some sections. However, in some instances you’ll get to control another character; Mary Jane. Mary Jane will reportedly be playable during key moments in the game, and I’m excited to see how this could impact the narrative.
What’s on the horizon?
It looks like Insomniac will be delivering on content with Marvel’s Spider-Man, and for those of you that are looking for more, I’m sure you’ll be glad to know that there will be an additional three chapters added to the game after release.
Details are scarce, but The City that Never Sleeps DLC series will feature three new chapters that add new villains, characters and more suits. You’ll gain access to these if you purchase the deluxe edition of the game, and I’m sure you’ll have the option to purchase it separately post-release.
I mentioned earlier that Sony have done well in publishing a collection of exclusive titles that provide an entertaining gameplay experience. With Marvel’s Spider-Man, it looks like that trend will continue, especially when you examine the level of quality that Insomniac Games have produced this generation. Keep an eye out for Marvel’s Spider-Man when it releases this year because it could easily be one of the top contenders for Game of the Year.
