When looking at releases on the Nintendo Switch this year, it’s easy to admit that 2018 won’t quite reach the heights of last year. To be fair, with amazing titles like Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey, it’d be hard to top no matter what. Nevertheless, Nintendo have some interesting games coming out for the platform this year, and one that looks especially exciting is Octopath Traveler.
For those of you that haven’t heard about it yet, Octopath Traveler is an upcoming role-playing game for the Nintendo Switch. Developed by the same team at Square Enix that gave us Bravely Default, the game sets itself apart from others with its unique “HD-2D” aesthetic – one that resembles 16-bit-style sprites like older games, but at the same time features detailed environments and effects.
What’s it about?
Despite releasing in only a few weeks, we haven’t heard much about the overarching storyline of Octopath Traveler or about the journeys that the adventurers are going on. What we do know is that the game will focus on eight adventures, who are all on their own journeys. At some point, these characters will come in contact with each other and can work together to fulfil their quests.
The lack of information regarding the plot is a surprising but a welcomed trend for a game these days, as we’re normally shown much more. This means that we’ll be going into the game without much knowledge of what it’ll be about, and I’m excited to see how the story unfolds.
What can players do?
As mentioned previously, when players get their hands on Octopath Traveler they’ll have a choice between eight characters to choose from when starting their journey. Each of these characters begin their journey differently, and over the course of the game you’ll come in contact with all of them and recruit them as a part of your team. As you recruit them, you’ll also gain access to their story, and you’ll have the ability to complete each one within a single playthrough. You can only have four in your party at once, but you’re free to swap them in and out at any time by going to an inn.
It’s not just the journey that differentiates these adventurers either. Each adventurer possesses a unique command, which provides them with an ability when interacting with characters within the game. Additionally, each character has a special talent that they can utilise in battle. For example, the scholar, Cyrus, can gain insight on an opponent’s weaknesses at the start of battle, while the hunter, H’aanit, can capture and tame beasts which can then be used against enemies.
While Octopath Traveler has been featured predominantly in Nintendo Directs, I still think that it’s a game that’s flying under the radar of a lot of people. With a unique aesthetic and what looks to be a large amount of content for players to experience, I think Octopath Traveler has a good chance of being one of the sleeper hits of 2018.
Octopath Traveler releases for the Nintendo Switch on July 23, 2018.
