Shadow of the Tomb Raider

In just a few weeks, Tomb Raider will be back. It’s been a few years since we’ve seen a Tomb Raider game, but as a fan of the reboot, I’m one of the many people that are interested in seeing where Lara’s journey takes her next.

The biggest difference that some might not be aware of is that the game is being handled by a different developer. This time around Eidos Montreal are the primary developer of the game, while Crystal Dynamics are assisting alongside their development of The Avenger’s Project. Eidos Montreal are more than capable of producing enjoyable games based on their past projects, so it’ll be interesting to see what they come up with for Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

What’s it about?

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a continuation of the storyline that we’ve seen in the past. Lara’s character has developed considerably, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider looks bound to produce some key moments in her journey.

This time around, Lara will be thrown into a landscape that’s deadlier than anything she’s faced before. In Latin America, a vast and dangerous jungle holds a Mayan Relic that Lara’s own Father once sought. In her attempt to obtain it, things go south as Lara once again comes in contact with Trinity, who attempt to foil her every move as she races against time to stop a Maya apocalypse.

What can players do?

Shadow of the Tomb Raider looks to be providing an experience that improves upon a number of features that we’ve seen in the previous games while also adding its own flair to make it standout.

The team at Eidos Montreal have expanded on the series’ stealth gameplay by adding some new features that players will be able to utilise. Lara will have the ability to take down foes with her grappling hook, and she’ll also be able to light petrol tanks to hurl at unsuspecting enemies. Additionally, players can now use mud as camouflage so that enemies have a harder time detecting Lara as she blends in with her surroundings.

Exploration has always been a mainstay throughout the series, and in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Eidos Montreal are aiming to provide an experience like never before. Tombs are better than ever, requiring players to utilise traversal techniques to uncover them and their wits to overcome the deadly challenges that are inside. Upon playing through the game, players will also find that underwater traversal has been expanded significantly, with underwater tunnels systems and crevasses being available to explore.

What’s on the horizon?

Square Enix have already announced what we can expect from the game’s season pass, as they have outlined that after launch the game will receive a total of seven new adventures. Identified as ‘Paths’, theses add-ons will feature a new narrative, missions, and a challenge tomb. You’ll also receive a new outfit, weapon and skill to go with them.

The promise of seven additional add-ons shows that we’ll be getting some significant post-launch support much like what we saw with Rise of the Tomb Raider. However, we don’t know how long this content will actually be, but I hope that we’ll be provided with something that feels worthwhile.

It feels weird to say that we’ll be able to play the latest Tomb Raider game in just a few short weeks, but we’re getting just that. Oddly enough, I still think Square Enix are holding back on information at the moment as we haven’t quite seen as much as I would expect. Admittedly, that is a bit worrisome but if Eidos Montreal are able to take the framework created by Crystal Dynamics in the previous two entries, I’d say we’re in for a fun time.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be available for Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC on September 14.
